Learning about Kefir

Are you familiar with Kefir?  I was not, until about a month ago.  Since my family has changed our diets, I'm always on the lookout for "treats" to fix for the kids.  I was at Kroger one day and saw a bottle of Kefir.  I decided to give it a try.  I tried it plain and it tasted like a liquid Greek yogurt.  I added it to my Vita Mix, threw in some berries, a frozen banana and a small package of Stevia and BOOM - we had a very tasty, ice cream like, shake.  The girls loved it and I did too!  Then I decided to read up on Kefir and this is what I found:

The benefits of consuming kefir regularly in the diet

Easily digested, it cleanses the intestines, provides beneficial bacteria and yeast, vitamins and minerals, and complete proteins. Because kefir is such a balanced and nourishing food, it contributes to a healthy immune system and has been used to help patients suffering from AIDS, chronic fatigue syndrome, herpes, and cancer. Its tranquilizing effect on the nervous system has benefited many who suffer from sleep disorders, depression, and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

The regular use of kefir can help relieve all intestinal disorders, promote bowel movement, reduce flatulence and create a healthier digestive system. In addition, its cleansing effect on the whole body helps to establish a balanced inner ecosystem for optimum health and longevity.
Kefir can also help eliminate unhealthy food cravings by making the body more nourished and balanced. Its excellent nutritional content offers healing and health-maintenance benefits to people in every type of condition.

Wow!  Who knew?  We will be drinking more of this yummy drink!

I Have a Challenge

We all know using a microwave could not possibly be good for us.  I've tried to use ours less and less.  With becoming less dependent on pre-prepared foods, it has not been that hard.  I use it more for warming things up.  BUT - I am giving myself a challenge and I hope you join me.  I am going microwave free for 30 days.  That is my short term challenge.  If I am successful, the spot where my microwave sits will be replaced with my new dehydrator.  Well, I don't actually have the dehydrator yet, but I want one.  Such yummy raw food can be prepared with it.  But, I'll leave that for another blog.  :)

Check out the link below for more info on microwave hazards.

This is the learning as I go part

I did not plan on blogging again today, but I am upset and wanted to share something that I just learned.

My kiddos have a problem with cavities.  Sometimes I get frustrated with them thinking they are not taking care of their teeth like they should be.  I've bought the fun toothbrushes, toothpastes, bright colored and funny shaped floss and cool mouthwash.  The pediatric dentist that I was taking the girls to was also concerned about their teeth so he suggested more rinses and brush on gels for them.

I've noticed in the last month or so that the girls teeth seemed to be getting darker.  One kiddo has more of a grayish color and one more of a brownish color.  Now what - I wonder.  I again focus more on good brushing and doing so more often.

I was reading someone else's concern about fluoride on Facebook this morning and that lead me to read some articles that were posted.  Which lead me to pull up pics and GUESS WHAT - My girls have Dental Fluorosis.  Dental Fluorosis is a health condition caused by a child receiving too much fluoride during tooth development.

So all of that extra fluoride to help with cavities actually is causing tooth discoloration.  And the more I read about fluoride, the more I wonder how it is affecting them in ways that I cannot see.  So, as I make my way down the knowledge trail towards all things more natural, I am in search of a toothpaste that not only does not contain fluoride, but also none of the other yucky chemicals that we should not be ingesting.  Looks like Bert's Bees has a good one.  I'll keep you posted.  :)

In The Begining

I am a Wife and a Mom and a Nutrition Enthusiast. And...a former junk food junkie. I grew up on pre-packaged foods, not home made meals. As an adult, I fell into old habits. I've never been much of a cook, so going out to eat or eating pre-packaged foods was just a way of life. After getting very overweight (160 lbs), I started a new job and sat right next to someone who was going through her own journey to healthy living. She introduced me to the idea of a raw food diet. My interest was peaked. I researched this way of eating and could not believe the amazing stories I found.  The food looked great and the healing that was taking place by these people simply by changing their diets was amazing.

My first step was the introduction of green drinks.  I ordered a Vita Mix and I was on my way. I started making green drinks as meal substitutions and lost 30 pounds. I've never been much of a veggie eater, but I loved drinking my veggies.  I'm not sure that I will ever be 100% raw, but I think any increase in raw fruits and veggies in an improvement.

Then I was lucky enough to meet a wonderful nutritionist.  I went aisle by aisle with her in the supermarket to fully understand the foods that I was buying and how artificial coloring, artificial flavoring, artificial sweeteners and artificial preservatives can affect our health and well being.

I am so excited about our family's changes that I want to share them with you. And I have to say - Here's to you Lauren and Melissa. I will never be able to thank you guys enough.
